A rally for the 98 percenters!

I am very excited about the upcoming Colbert and Stewart rallies.  I'm glad they decided to put forth a moderate answer to the extremist rallies that have been going on thus far.  I hope that they get a million people on the mall to give voice to the 90+% of Americans whose voices are ignored for the guy who is screaming at the top of his lungs.   More after the jump.

I think about myself when I was in elementary school.  I was really smart, got great grades, but I was extremely shy.  Being called on to answer a question was terrifying.  So when teachers thought about their classes, those that raised their hands more or acted out more got attention.  I didn't raise my hand, not because I didn't know the answer, but because I didn't want any attention.  I worked hard, kept my head down, and just wanted to get to learn things.  I'm not sure how many teachers would remember me until I got to High School and came out of my shell.

The point is, these teachers probably remember the kids who acted out.  I know a few teachers, and they still spend their time talking about the problem children.  It's hard to forget someone you sent to the principal's office multiple times.  The media is acting just like these teachers.  They are giving more attention to the problem children in our country.  Giving them attention, which is exactly what they crave, keeps them acting out.  It doesn't help that one network is giving these kids fireworks and sending them off to the next class.

So as a salve against the craziness that has overtaken our country, I'm happy that The Daily Show and Colbert Report are doing something.  They are essentially (to continue to beat the teacher metaphor to death) having an awards day for all the good kids.  This is the nation's Honor Roll announcement.  This is the nation's student of the month award.  The bad kids aren't going to understand it, and they'll probably ridicule it, but it will do the nation some good.  Plus only cool kids could have a satirical march.
